Key Decision - The option to teach some elements of the programme is left to the discretion of schools in consultation with parents. These areas are called 'Key Decisions' and in age-appropriate ways, cover the content of genitalia(KS1), puberty (LKS2), sexual intimacy(UKS2), Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) (KS1, LKS2 and UKS2) and the Protected Characteristics concerning sex (UKS2).

I think Year 4 is a good time to start learning about physical changes during puberty. *

I am happy for my child to be taught about sexual intimacy in Year 6, in a way that is respectful of Catholic beliefs *

I think it is important that pornography is covered from an internet safety perspective. *

Note - This is taught to pupils in UKS2 and involves watching a video of a child who opens something on their device (we won't see the screen in class) that they feel uncomfortable seeing. We will then explain the steps they should take and this will involve a short discussion.

I think it is important that pornography is discussed in a way in which people are 'used'. *

I think it's appropriate that in KS1 FGM is not named explicitly, but that children are reminded that private body parts are private. *

I think that in LKS2 when children are learning about different kinds of abuse, including sexual abuse (referred to as 'abuse of private parts') it's a good time for children to learn some basic facts about FGM. *

I think that UKS2 is the best time for children to watch a film which answers the following questions: What is FGM? How does FGM affect health? Who is at risk? Why does it happen? How are people trying to stop it? Who can I tell? *

I would be happy for my child in UKS2 to discuss scenarios of people who are being discriminated against or bullied because of the protected characteristics of sex and/or sexual orientation. *

I would be happy for my child in UKS2 to learn what attraction is and that someone can be attracted to someone of the same or the opposite sex.

I think that UKS2 is a good time to hear teaching clarifying that gender identity is separate from sexual orientation. *
